Adding to diversity in the theater is a positive goal, but a PC barrier is counter-productive. What does the original poster think of Ali Stroker as Ado Annie, a character who is not wheelchair-bound per Hammerstein?
The history of Broadway is a lot of straight roles played by gay people and vice-versa, a lot of gentile roles played by ethnic Jews, blind or physically-handicapped characters seldom played by actors with those qualities. There is a suspension of disbelief for audiences in the arts. Actors are not their characters. That's part of the electricity of the theater.
