I'm not yet able to articulate the nuances as to why this feels "wrong" to me

Gay people like many other audiences like to see themselves reflected back to themselves from the stage in a more idealized form which could mean physical beauty or heterosexualized masculinity?

A performatively gay character is more of a financial risk for a largely straight audience even in a play with gay protagonists on Broadway?

A performatively gay character is seen as comic and not dramatic by both gay and straight audiences?

The production cast the play for reasons other than what the possibilities of the performance of being gay on a Broadway stage could mean?
