I'm afraid I also have doubts about its merits as a complete opera, particularly the full arc of its musical scope. The current MET production has only twenty minutes of cuts (thus sayeth the sages on parterre.com) but felt incomplete and sprawling to me. I still loved the experience of listening to the opera, particularly its gorgeous and surprisingly modernist orchestrations... so maybe it doesn't matter to me. I think it's certainly a better opera than the lumbering, underwhelming though relatively concise MACBETH of Verdi even with a superstar like Netrebko at its center.
