I thought this production did a nice job of bringing out the debate about what constitutes "a man" in the community of Catfish Row... a debate that's deep in the text of the opera. So Eric Owens' stately and rather asexual Porgy is a fitting contrast to Alfred Walker's sexually menacing Crown and Frederick Ballentine's sexually exploitative Sportin' Life. But I understand that many people found Owens' Porgy underwhelming. To me it made sense within the production.
