I think the high quality of the writing is what got it a slot. It is funny and moving. It is one of those rare plays that takes young characters seriously.
Usually "pussy" is treated as an obscene word. Hearing it said like some kind of prayer or sign of respect, may not be the most dramatically innovative choice, but after all that preceded it, it has an impact.
I suspect you saw a production recently. It is a hard play to do. I saw a production last season that made the play seem ridiculous. But if you read the script you might feel differently about it.
