Why So Many One Person Shows? Where's the Audience?

I really (usually) don't like One Handers. I skipped "Sea Wall/A Life" (the subject matter, too, seemed depressing), I saw (because of a Deal) "Bella, Bella" and enjoyed it (so there). Now I see there's a oner with Laura Linney (which got good reviews in London) "My Name is Lucy Barton" coming to B'Way and "Birthday Candles" starring Debra Messing. I know they're cheap to produce and they've got one Big Star each. But come on. We're talking Theater. I found Hal Holbrook's "Mark Twain Tonight" tiresome by the end of the first act and Steven Berkoff doing Shakespeare recitations boring too, after a while. It's not my cup of tea.
