Agreed; the play makes a case for what he provides these women at particular turning points in their lives. They don't choose him out of a line-up, and his blend of sagacity, rue, resiliency and protectiveness appeal to both, for different lengths of time.
Interestingly enough, one review referred to him as pot-bellied (he's not) and another went out of the way to say he's actually in damn good shape. What he's not is "Marty," by any stretch, which I believe was noted here.
