Well, I didn't think he was targeting her as a conquest. The actor's(character's) emotional breakdown in that scene -- quite moving last Saturday afternoon anyway -- told me he was changed from the pile-up of experiences dramatized. But changed doesn't mean he can alter behavior. Or instantly adopt new communication skills. He didn't know how to proceed other than using the limited tool box he possessed. He seemed unable to reach out otherwise. But he's not the same. He's lost two women, two people, and yet still wants desperately to "only connect," as the famous saying goes.
