Culture Clash Founders Riff on Moliere in San Diego
Posted by: BillEadie 12:07 am EDT 10/13/19

Culture Clash founders Herbert Siguenza and Ric Salinas are appearing together in Mr. Siguenza’s world premiere play, “Bad Hombres/Good Wives,” at San Diego Repertory Theatre through October 27. The play takes off from Moliere’s “The School for Wives,” resetting it in 1990s narco culture in Sinaloa, Mexico. The play adds a fair amount of Shakespeare, a smidgen of Oscar Wilde, and a lot of Latinx culture—telenovalas, Corridors, Spanglish and banda (featuring a talented and sexy sousaphone player).

I imagine that my colleague, David Dixon, will review this play for TB Regional, so I won’t steal his thunder. But, I’ll say that the appropriation works better than other works by the prolific Mr. Siguenza and may find its way elsewhere.
