The lyrics to "Mushnik & Son" explicitly say he is using him:

(I never liked him much before,
But count the cash that's in
the drawer
I've got no choice- I'm much
too poor-)

and when I saw the showcase in '82 everyone was on the same cartoony page. I hope that hasn't changed.
