|Allrighty. It's a song from way back when, probably before the drug culture and counterculture of things like Woodstock, hippies, Haight-Ashbury etc. came to national attention, where recreational drugs are casually and actually entertainingly with a gentle tone being named. I would think that back then that might have been kind of daring, the way that Neil Simon occasionally would throw a four letter word or have a naughty joke as an aside in his plays to make it slightly risque, what couldn't really be said on television but could be in the theater. Otherwise, I brought it up to highlight the song to some people who might not know the song or the show, which I just a few years ago discovered and got an out-of-print copy, and which I think is pretty damn wonderful.
Plus you find lots of Broadway songs in ad campaigns through the years. "Feelin' Good" from "Roar of the Greasepaint" was one that's been used quite a bit in the last few years, among others.
I'd actually love to see Encores or someone do a production of HIGH SPIRITS, which has 3 great women's roles and 1 for its male lead, especially if they could manage to do some choreography with a Flying by Foy type of thing. Gwen Verdon was originally sought for Elvira, and good as Tammy Grimes sounds on the recording, one can only imagine how a dancing/flying Verdon might have been somersaulting, doing acrobatics and kicking her heels up while in the air!
So, I'm asking this question for the entertainment value it might bring, as well as a for an answer to my question if the song ever came up in some kind of documentary, mock documentary or public service announcement regarding recreational drugs. It might have worked wonderfully on a show like "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In", for instance.
