"The only issue I had (and it's a minor one), that, although the cast is multicultural, I never had the feeling that the story was anything other than the white gay male in NYC story. Sure the African American characters talked a bit about the high rates of HIV in that population, and the Latino guy did alot of rolling R's, but the cast could be changed to completely white, and the script would have been the same."
I had a very similar reaction in London, and among people I know who saw it several felt the same. Not just white, either, but a rather clique-ish substrata of the upper end of the white middle class. To be fair, the source novel (from which, yes, Lopez departs significantly) is also a story about people who almost exclusively talk to people like themselves.
