I wouldn't say that translation needed some massaging for the Miller production, I would say a completely new translation was necessary for the new setting. The translation they used had a stilted formality to it, which would have been fine if the original period and setting of the opera had been preserved but seemed all wrong for Italian-American NYC in the '50s, when and where the characters' speech would have been FAR less formal. But actually, I think it would have been extremely difficult for anyone to write a colloquial singing translation would have sounded right with the music, which is why I think they should have just kept the original Italian text with subtitles translated into more colloquial speech.
