I watched it last night. Very much agreed on the level of performance all around. I've only seen the tour, not the original Broadway performance, but I definitely agree that Donnelly made a very good case for Charlie's behavior, bad and good.
I agree about the score as well, though I do like Act II and do like the ballads. ;-) Even though Lauper has done theatre before, it doesn't necessarily mean that she'd have the right instincts in writing a Broadway score - but I think she really got this one right. And the finale really has to be one of the most irresistible in recent seasons of musicals.
