I'd glad Massoud spoke up

I applauded Disney for doing a worldwide search to find an actor of Mideastern descent to play the lead of their live-action ''Aladdin.'' And I think Mena Massoud was the movie's true ''diamond in the rough.'' There were film critics who gave him high marks, and the Hollywood Reporter, for one, raved that he and Naomi Scott, his Jasmine, ''displayed a winning chemistry and charm that make the central love story fully engaging.'' More importantly, audiences loved this ''Aladdin,'' at least to the tune of over $1 billion in box office. If it had bombed, you can bet the blame would've been laid at the feet of its leads, so since it's a worldwide blockbuster, they deserve a degree of credit (and a shot at other roles).

As for the Daily Beast article, Massoud ostensibly did it to plug his new Hulu series, ''Reprisal.'' It's not as if he called a press conference to gripe about his career after ''Aladdin.'' But when asked, he was candid enough to acknowledge that he hadn't gotten an audition in the wake of his Disney hit. As the story notes, the writer, Kevin Fallon, was in disbelief this was the case, so he made that the lead of the piece. To me, Massoud wasn't throwing a pity party; he was just acknowledging his reality. He's hardly the first actor of Mideastern descent to acknowledge how hard it is to find roles that aren't about playing terrorists. (As far as I can tell, ''Aladdin'' on Broadway, which opened in 2014, has yet to cast an actor of Mideastern descent to play the title role.) Maybe this story will spotlight the situation about why this is, and help open up opportunities for Massoud and others.
