TOOTSIE hasn’t been successful because it simply isn’t as good as it could have been. It’s amusing but not riotous. The score is merely serviceable. Santino Fontana is very good but not great.

The story just isn’t believable, and I didn’t care enough about the characters to suspend my disbelief. It plays very literally and realistically while not being realistic in the least.

The movie is a different property altogether and was released at a very different cultural moment than our current one. It also has an iconic performance from the singular Dustin Hoffman.

TOOTSIE the Musical is pleasant enough, but pleasant isn’t good enough to have a successful run on Broadway.

Book musicals can still be successful - I’m looking at you DEAR EVAN HANSEN.
