I saw Laurie Beechman in the first national tour in Boston and then several times when she did the role (over and over) on Broadway. In fact, I think she played the role on Broadway more than any other actress. I never saw another Grizabella because I did not want to. I was not a fan of the show but paid to see it numerous times just for Beechman's 8 to 9 minutes of stage time. She was absolutely stunning. The sadness in her eyes, and that voice; holy cow could she sing that song! There are several videos of her singing it on Youtube, including one on the Donahue show when she was new to the part and had not been ravished by cancer. But even the videos where she is clearly not in the best of health, her performance is still remarkable. I always think of all the roles she never was able to play.
