The Special Event category is gone. The Tony rules and regulations for 2018-2019 are posted on their website, and the words "Special Event" don't appear anywhere in them.
I thought the Special Event category was useful, but there were seasons where there were very few eligible shows, so I understand why the Tonys got rid of it.
This year, it looks like a bunch of limited runs aren't mentioned in the press release and therefore presumably not Tony-eligible. I doubt any would have received a nomination anyway. In addition to American Utopia and Freestyle Love Supreme, Derren Brown Secret, Slava's Snowshow, and the Harry Connick and Kristin Chenoweth concerts are all not listed. |
