The story of an African American artist on the rise. A story of hip hop and nightlife in New York City. A sneak-peak into the adventurous world of live music born in the depths of bars and clubs in the East Village and Lower East Side, from the Izzy Bar to Nublu. The story of the start of a musical movement and The Real Live Show's groundbreaking sounds. NYC-native Malik Work meant to start the first hip hop reality TV series with his band back in the early 2000s, but in a twist of events, the "reality" turned out to be different and Malik struggles to regain the reigns of his life. In this experimental immersive hip hop theater show, the fourth wall is dissolved: the audience is at the same time actively engaged in the story, an integral part of the set, and playing a crucial character in the narrative. Through laughter and tears, Verses At Work inspires and educates. It seamlessly intertwines video, music, musical theater, hip-hop, poetry, dance, and conventional monologue in a captivating and charismatic show, featuring original music by a variety of New York's finest jazz, dance, groove, and hip hop music producers, showcasing the present and future of creative, immersive, musical storytelling and performance. A Unique Verses At Work production This newly re-envisioned version of Verses At Work is absolutely unique, and this occasion is particularly special. For the first time Verses At Work is performed at Nublu, where much of the story takes place. It is, in fact, Nublu's very first ever a theatrical production. Secondly, for the first time the piece will not be performed as a one-man-show. Featuring the return of The Real Live Show's celebrated muse and dancer, Roela "LaMazing" LaMae Caparas ,it will include live music with surprise guest musicians and singers bringing a diversified array of genres from R&B to Opera, and surprise guest dancers bringing the vibe to the dance floor. Think concert meets storytelling, with a bar and dancing. Thirdly, for the first time, Verses At Work transforms into an immersive experience. The audience is invited to participate and engage actively in the storytelling, including the re-enactment of club shenanigans. Nublu's entire space is the canvas, the theater and setting, and the audience is both taking in the journey, and becoming part of it. Verses At Work Themes The performance is aptly scheduled during Black History Month. Malik Work shares extremely personal anecdotes of universal value and invites the audience to reflect on both timeless themes, and those of contemporary relevance. Verses at Work poses questions on the role that institutionalized racism plays in the trajectory of a life, whether the effects of said racism are perceived internally or actualized externally. Re-tracing his artistic and personal re-birth, and his quest to thrive financially off of his art, Malik explores the nuances of Black masculinity and Society's relationship to art. But Verses At Work is also a Love Story, and makes for a perfect date on Valentine's Day weekend. The love for New York City, Music, Romance, and Life, with all the ups and downs relationships can bring. Verses At Work History Malik Work returns to the stage ready to delight with yet another inventive and renewed rendition of his show Verses At Work. Work has continuously, creatively and successfully adapted his script since he started sharing it with the public. The 2016 film adaptation directed by Lucas Mendes has successfully screened across coasts winning the "International Spotlight Award" at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2016, and receiving recognition at the Harlem International Film Festival in 2017, and the Hip Hop Film Festival NYC in 2018. The 2017 national premiere of the one-man theater show, the script's original format, saw Work nominated in the "best solo performance" category of the AUDELCO Awards. The 2018 international premiere in South Africa was such a success he was to return the following year for a second tour and is currently working on other projects there. The 2019 shortened version of the script saw light as Nostos In Verse paying homage to Odyssey and Greek theater and filled the room at the Park Avenue Armory during Sunday Salon: Spoken Word, for the 20th anniversary of the Friday Night Poetry Slam of the New York City's renowned Nuyorican Poets Café.
