| You can google "The Last Ship the musical" and find the link to its Wikipedia article, which includes a full list of musical numbers and who sings them during the Broadwahy run as well as in the Toronto production last year, which I assume is fairly close to what is being done on the tour. Wikipedia also includes the varioius different casts and a list of songs on the cast album. I saw the Broadway production twice, both times with Sting performing. I liked the show a great deal and agree there is some beautfiul music. I did have some book issues however. In particular, while I understood the idea of building one last ship, I couldn't totally suspend disbelief and buy into it. So, they take it out to sea - then what? That said, when I saw LAST SHIP a second time, right before it closed, that didn't bother me nearly as much, and I felt there were some deeply moving moments, with the show playing well as an uplifting and inspiring tribute to the human spirit. My hope had been that the rewritten book might address some of the issues that did bother me, but it sounds like it did not. I had read a little about the revisions and knew that characters had been eliminated or changed. I did like the generational father and son dual relationships in the original (Gideon and his father, and Gideon and Meg's son) and was disappointed to read that in the rewritten script Meg now has a daughter, but obviously can't judge the results without seeing the show. I am pleased that THE LAST SHIP has toured and that a worthy show has found life after a less than successful (at the box office) Broadway run. |
