In reply to: The revised version of The Last Ship starring Sting - dbg 12:12 am EST 02/03/20

While I enjoyed and found much to appreciate in the tour version, which I also saw in LA last week, I think the show is VERY slow and has very little going on. There are 2 competing main plots that have almost nothing to do with each other (Gideon moving back to win back the girl he left and the reveal of their daughter / the ship builders union) and a minor B plot of Sting's health and his wife, which is part of the shipyard story (and probably has like 1/10th of the time in Act 1 but like 1/3 of it in act 2. But in the long Act 1, scene after scene, almost nothing happened... and not in a good way. I think in act 1 we got the premise of each story in the first 20 min and then another hour of revisiting basically the same thing with no further development and little reason to care or chance to know the characters.

But I also had frustrating questions not answered, like is it real that a shipyard/town would make a whole huge ship on the non-contractual promise of pay when it's done? And why can't they just selling it for a more competitive 90 million pounds rather than sell it for scrap if they can't find a buyer at 130 mil pounds?! And what happens when it goes to sea? And why does Gideon want to be with this woman he knew as a teen and hasn't seen or 15 years? And why does Sting avoid life-saving surgery to go give a speech, why can't he give it the night before and then have the surgery... I get that the ship yard is their life and community but this is not a very fair thing to do to his wife!
