Top Banana was basically done this way. It was the post-Broadway tour, and the sets were moved to a soundstage where a fake theater was built, but the result was essentially a filmed stage musical getting a theatrical release. (Weirdly, it was filmed in 3-D but released "flat.")
I can't imagine the film won't be elligible for many awards (but not, I imagine, any of the writing-related trophies and maybe not things related to sets and costumes). But I also can't imagine Oscar voters being enthusiastic about rewarding such a production except possibly in technical categories. |
