The Emmys seem to be fine with nominations for filmed versions of stage performances or concerts. Great Performances has had a lot of nominations in several categories, including acting for Kevin Kline in Cyrano, costume design, music direction, etc. for material that did not originate on television.
I would imagine Hamilton would be eligible for "regular" Oscar categories, but I can't see anyone being nominated or winning. The three Tony winners for acting, although having good careers since their Hamilton days, have not had a big splash since then, and they are not household names. Unfortunately, that is part of the way the system works. Brad Pitt and Laura Dern would not be the frontrunners for Oscars this year if their current film was their first movie. And the tech work, like costume design, can't compete against big budget, lavish films.
I think the 5 year delay between filming and release doesn't help. Several Oscar voters probably had seen the original cast or the first LA run, and Hamilton might seem like an old property to them by next October. |
