I loved the original 'Ship,'' but I doubt the new one will float my boat (with spoilers)

I loved ''The Last Ship'' and went along on its voyage many times on Broadway. John Logan and Brian Yorkey's book about a dying shipyard town and its colorful community touched me, and Sting's stellar score ranged from rich and romantic (''What Say You, Meg?'') to rousing and rowdy (''We've Got Now't Else''). The incredible cast was shipshape from stem to stern: Michael Esper, Rachel Tucker, Collin Kelly-Sordelet, Aaron Lazar, Jimmy Nail and later Sting himself. And at the heart of it all was a moving father-and-son conflict, where Gideon wrestled with the spirit of his father and grappled with getting to know his grownup son, Tom. It all culminated in an amazing musical soliloquy that Esper delivered, called ''Ghost Story.''

Sadly, it sounds like ''The Last Ship'' has been keenhauled so much that I fear it'll be missing so much of what made it so memorable for me. Gone is Arthur, who made up the third side of the love triangle of him, Gideon and Meg, dramatized so beautifully in the trio ''When We Dance.'' And, most of all, gone are the powerful parallels of its multigenerational father and son conflict, which fueled the enchanting waltz of ''The Night the Pugilist Learned How to Dance'' and Gideon's stirring ''Ghost Story,'' which now has been cut. (In the reworked version, Gideon has a daughter, not a son.) I'll still do my best to catch the tour sometime, but I will always cherish my original memories and Broadway cast album even though that ''Ship'' has sailed.
