I saw Catherine Burns in the two-hander Two Small Bodies with Larry Bryggman at Playwrights Horizon in the late 70s. I thought she (and the play) was terrific. I particularly remember a very affecting speech she delivered at the stage edge, far stage left. It was one of those moments that sometimes makes you levitate. (John McMartin delivered a similar performance in Great God Brown in the early '70s.)
In the early '80s, I found myself standing in line at TKTS behind Miss Burns. It was just after work when you used to be able to just walk over there, pick up something, have time to go home for something to eat (and maybe a nap) and go out later. I was dressed in my office clothes (that means a suit for young people who don't know about "back in the day") and Miss Burns was dressed in an equivalent office outfit. I asked her: "Are you Catherine Burns?" She looked at me warily and did not answer. She just left the line and walked away. I still feel guilty about that intrusion. |
