It will be interesting to see what happens to the box office for the stage show after the film gets released. The traditional thinking for decades was that the movie release of a stage show would hurt the stage version's box office, but I think Chicago was one of the first to show that didn't actually happen. When MTV showed a live performance of Legally Blonde, it counterintuitively seemed to help the box office. So I don't think it's inevitable that the stage version of Hamilton will have its grosses suffer.
One big difference, of course, is that Chicago and Legally Blonde had better name recognition after the movie or TV version. Hamilton is already part of the culture. |
