| Thank you for the information you provided in this post. I had never seen nor listened to “Ballroom” (nor its source, “The Queen of the Stardust Ballroom”) before last Friday. I was able to find some information online about what was in various versions, but I was hesitant to make pronouncements in the review, as I wasn’t entirely sure of my sources. I would be interested in knowing how Michael Bennett became involved in producing, directing, and choreographing the Broadway version of “Ballroom.” And, while “Ballroom” was nominated for quite a few Tony Awards, it only won for choreography. Also, the score wasn’t nominated, and I wonder if it was actually eligible, given that several of the songs were taken from the television version. I agree that “Ballroom” deserves a hearing via a venue such as ENCORES. As far as CVRep is concerned, sources tell me that it is the leading professional theatre company in the area. It has only recently moved into its current facility, and the board president had an essay in the [fairly lavish and expensive to produce] program urging patrons to support a “second phase” of a capital campaign to finish the renovation of the space. The number of permanent paid staff is small: the marketing manager (who also handled my press inquiries) doubled as box office staff on opening night. I understand that the founders were involved in the entertainment business in Los Angeles before coming to Palm Springs and opening a professional theatre company. They draw on their Los Angeles contacts in finding performers. I assume that the word, “repertory” in the company name refers to the variety of productions they mount. I also imagine that they do rely on a group of actors to cast in one production after another. There are a number of theatre companies in the area, but I believe that most of them qualify as “volunteer theatre.” In my experience in San Diego, there are two theatre companies that use “repertory” in their names, and both cast each production individually. The one company here that did have a repertory company was founded as a street theatre troupe. This company no longer employs an acting company, but they do try to find jobs internally for actors they hire regularly. Bill, in SanDiego |
