| I have never seen such a list. It would be very difficult to compile. The first question would be: by "Off Off Broadway theatres," do you mean theatre companies or venues? There are hundreds of each, but very little overlap between the two lists, because most companies that produce Off Off Broadway shows do not have their own spaces; they rent venues. Also, the line between Off and Off-Off Broadway is very porous. Often the difference would be defined by the Equity contract being used. "Showcase code" productions can only be produced in theaters with 99 seats or fewer, and are definitely "Off-Off Broadway.' And there are high end contracts specifically called "Off Broadway." But in between there are all kinds of weekly contract arrangements like Letter of Agreement contracts and Mini contracts that can also use 99-seat houses or smaller; these shows are generally listed as Off Broadway productions for PR purposes though AEA would probably call most of them Off Off. Some relatively prestigious theatres like EST and Rattlestick fall into this in-between category. And then there's the question of Non-Equity shows. Smaller ones would generally be called Off Off Broadway, but there are some in larger theaters, with the actors on weekly salaries, that consider themselves Off Broadway and market themselves accordingly. The distinction can also be blurred when talking about spaces. For example, the 99-seat rental spaces at Theatre Row can be used for showcases and usually are, but there are some companies (like the Mint) that have regularly produced LOA productions in those spaces and are generally thought of as Off Broadway companies. In any case, a list would be extremely long: Equity traditionally approves about 2000 showcase productions a year, and I don't know of anybody who keeps records of Non-Equity productions. The number of both is probably declining somewhat since the Festival circuit has shrunk in recent years with the shrinking of FringeNYC and the demise of the MITF and the NYMF, all of which presented both showcases and Nonunion shows. Off-Off Broadway companies often form to produce just one or two shows and then disband. Both the producing organizations and the tiny venues are constantly opening up and shutting down, so the list would also be in constant flux. |
