| There is a very strict returns policy mandated by law since they are a State theatre - by law they are not allowed to accept a returned ticket to resell it to another patron. They are not allowed to even take a ticket you are not going to use and give it away for free to someone. So if you are looking for a returned/unused ticket the best bet is to stand in front of the theatre with a sign saying you are looking for a seat. But be careful - if someone is offering to sell you a seat for greater than the price on the ticket it may very well be a fake ticket or worse, a sting operation by the police and they will detain you and question you for buying unlawful merchandise and you'll probably miss the show. They are very diligent in cracking down on scalping at the CF and the two opera houses since the tickets are heavily subsidized. Your best bet is to go in person to the box office (several times if need be) and ask for any availability; things do open up, especially if you are going solo. This is a pain in the butt when you are trying to see Paris but I have been very pleasantly surprised at how many times I've gotten seats the "day of" or a few days before shows -- it is worth the effort. There is a stand by line that forms an hour or even more before the showtime to the left of the main entrance (which is on Place Colette) - the box office can give you an estimation of when the line is forming for the most popular shows. This is dicey as very few people get in from the line. There are also "Last Minute" seats which are sold exactly at one hour before show time at the "Little Box Office" - which is a box office window located on Rue Richelieu (the side where the gift shop is). A line forms well before for this also as these are 5 Euro seats (but they are noted partial view and are way up in the last rows of the theatre.) If it is Monday and you are under age 28 with photo ID in hand to prove so, there are a limited number of FREE seats given out at this "Little Box Office" one hour before show time. Once those are gone, they sell the $5 seats. One great thing about Paris theatre going is there are many commercial productions that begin at 9pm. So if you are desperate to see SOME theatre and can't get into the CF from the wait lines, at 8:30 you still have time to run to another show and get in at 9pm if you plan and pick something ahead (commercial productions always have seats open except in very rare circumstances). A great publication is "L'Official des Spectacles" which is a weekly booklet that costs an Euro and lists EVERYTHING that is happening in Paris that week - shows, concerts, museums, galleries, etc. It is sold at all tobacco shops, newstands and kiosks and the new one comes out every Wednesday morning. A good online resource to see what is playing is Pariscope (which was the original "L"official..." but no longer publishes a hard copy -- they are at "www.pariscope.fr" |
