The show previewed a long time after workshops, opened to meh reviews across the board. I haven't read a single report on either post that was overall position. So we're sorta past the Liliom--Green Grow the Lilacs--Tales of the South Pacific vs Carrie debate here. I'm raising questions that most reviews raised: why *this* story at this time. With so many naysayers scratching their heads and speaking to the generic characterizations, it seemed a strange misfire of artistic goals.

Period-specific source material is invariably re-minuted because a contemporary prism brings the attendant issues into new focus, or because the nostalgia factor inspires emotional investment. "Swinging" seems far from the #MeToo slash {fill in the blank}. Maybe I'm wrong. The show might've been perfect source material twenty, thirty years ago (again, see "I Love My Wife"). It's 2020 and this 1969 tale of serial monogamy vs "free love" (sic) that seem in opposition to our concerns. The show is an almost fizzle, considering the creative team. I open the discussion because of the level of disappointment.

As I asked: if someone feels differently, I'd be curious to hear how it worked for them.
