| Lerner wrote to Lenya in 1977: "I wish I loved he book and lyrics as much as I like the music." I think he was being sincere and it would be difficult to rewrite the show with Weill dying in 1950 and Lerner being in huge demand to do new projects on Broadway and Hollywood. Having seen disastrous attempts by other lyricists and librettists to try to rewrite Lerner after his death, I'm glad he didn't try doing it without Weill and when he really didn't have his heart in it. He had every right to use a trunk song in a musical--it happened all the time. |
