I seem to remember reading something along those lines (re: 1776), but also can't find factual backup.
However, Ross Martin definitely played John Adams in two regional productions. One was at Melody Top Theater (Wisconsin) in 1976; the other was at Sacramento Music Circus in 1977. Stubby Kaye was Franklin in both productions as well.
