I loved this play which I saw recently in previews at The Wyndham. It's a multi-generational story of a large extended family, beginning in 1899 and ending in 1955.
The play is very emotional and not Stoppard in high intellectual mode...but it's not always easy to follow. Patrick Marber has elegantly staged it chronologically in sections with several years in between scenes. So just as you've finally begun to figure out all the relationships and situations in 1899 at a holiday family gathering, the play moves to 1924 and the many actors played by young children in the prior scene are now played by adults. And the women characters played by the same actresses have completely different (period-appropriate) hairdos. So once again you're left to figure out who everyone is. And so on to 1938. There are many characters and it's difficult to keep track of their names. And then there's some doubling of roles so that also adds a bit to the confusion.
But by the staggering, highly emotional ending of the play I felt I'd caught up with each character's journey. I do hope Stoppard keeps editing the script if it comes to the US, just for a little more clarity. |
