TomE, great work! Thanks for digging that up. (And what a coincidence that he and Ross Martin both did ''1776'' in 1976.)

Just out of curiosity, I did my own digging and found my phone interview with Conrad on audiotape.

I totally forgot that we DID talk about his theater work. Besides ''1776,'' he says he also had done ''Carnival'' in 1980 and played El Gallo in ''The Fantasticks'' in 1983. Of the latter, he recalls his costume was ''very like 'Wiid West.' My pants were very tight. It was fun.''

Due to space, I left his theater stuff out of my story for the N.Y. Daily News, but for the record, here's what he said about ''1776'':

Conrad: ''The reviews were great. The audiences came in buses to Sullivan, this little place in Illinois. Then we sold out in St. Louis. And then we sold out at the Drury Lane [in Illinois]. Those experiences were extremely rewarding. I was up there doing and selling and singing. And to the people who might've underrated me as an actor before, it was my way of saying 'F*ck you!' ''

Me: ''Did you ever want to do Broadway?''

Conrad: ''I thought about it. I was offered 'Woman of the Year' [with Lauren Bacall], but New York had changed so much by then.''

Me: ''Looking back on your career, which performances are you the proudest of?''

Conrad: ''I'm proudest of [playing Pasquinel in the 1978 TV mini-series] 'Centennial.' And I'm proud of making my stage debut in '1776' to a standing ovation. John Adams was a great part, and I was totally immersed. There was no Robert Conrad up there.''

Me: ''I wish I could've seen you in it.''

Conrad: ''It was good. I don't always toot my horn. I know when I'm horrible. I was critiqued for a bad TV show called 'A Man Called Sloane.' I wrote [the reviewer at] TV Guide and said: ''Right on! You have captured the essence of real dreck.'' (Laughs.)
