Yes, it feels like a cop-out. I also am frustrated that he calls into the trap of stating that in order for a play to be diverse, it must be about race. He could have told the same story of the wealthy and financially comfortable bourgeois with black and brown bodies in the lead roles. oupled with the way he has handed the ensemble queens of color clownish moments of comedy and "authentic" language, it really does feel like he's making the same mistakes of many white writers - who are also being asked all the time to not write all-white shows.
It's frustrating, because I really enjoyed the play. But the more he defends it, the harder it is to ignore the intellectual shallowness of his writing. |
