| In my opinion comparing a playwright of color who writes a play (his Broadway debut) where the lead characters are all white and are played by actors of color is different than a white playwright who only writes plays about white characters played by white actors. It is reductive, in my opinion, to tell a person of color that they can only write plays about race. And the extent to which Lopez has been criticized on this point goes way beyond that leveled against any play that I can recall. (In fact, I can’t remember any plays I’ve seen of late that featured all white casts with all white actors being critiqued on this point.) |
