| Did anyone tell Lopez "he can only write plays about race"? The conversation on this piece is about the almost exclusive (poly-protagonist) depiction of LGBTQ lives via white Manhattanites. The dialog is about his omission of people color from the HIV/AIDS narrative in a play about legacy and community response to a pandemic that had vast cultural/societal as well as medical implications. No one is "telling him" what to write; rather, the discussion is a response to the universe of the play's production. Which, after all, employs 7 hours in an epic fashion to make its particular case. No one disputes Lopez's right as an artist to use the characters he wishes to employ in his storytellling. The issues in "The Inheritance" are about a work of art tethered to an era that, for queer people, is arguably like no other. And many, many people who fought, died, and everything in between, were of color. I'd like to add: Surely it's a conversation Lopez expected to ensue on this side of the Atlantic. |
