| And I loved Cerveris in the original staging. He was fierce, in presence and vocal performance, and somehow his scariness in the last third was uniquely his. When he stripped down he looked so exposed, and because his build was so different from JCM's, the role's inner life seemed oddly more enhanced. We saw Hedwig's pain in that body. It was an arresting impact of physicality on interpretation. It remains my favorite, though others were -- moment to moment -- more entertaining and had more showmanship. |
