After a long absence from the Metropolitan Opera, Freni returned sometime in in the late '80s or early '90s (I can't find the date right now) and was triumphant in several roles, including Manon Lescaut and Fedora. I was thrilled to see/hear her in in those, and I was also incredibly lucky enough (and smart enough to buy a ticket) to be present for her one partial stage performance as Madama Butterfly, when she sang Act III only as part of a gala.
