Many have assumed that to be the case, but when the show came out, Mr. Kander claimed that he wasn't even thinking about that interpretation of the lyric when he was writing it.
I suspect he was working subconsciously--how could you write "I miss my friend" when filling in for your departed lyricist and colleague and NOT have some art-imitates-life going on?--but Mr. Kander says he was unaware.
Beautiful song, though, and meaningful on many levels for many people. |
