| THE INHERITANCE was a sold out hit at the subsidized Young Vic. During that initial West End transfer there were 30,000 tickets available for $35 or less. It then played a successful West End Run. But here's the difference - there is no 'West End Penalty' equivalent to the 'Broadway Penalty' when you transfer a show from a not for profit. It doesnt cost $500,000 to $1,000,000 to load in a show in the West End. I imagine that INHERITANCE loaded in for around $100-150,000 tops. Actor salaries maybe go up $250-300 a week. At the Noel Coward, the Stage Manager salary scale is $1004 per week. Actor scale is $840 pw. On Broadway those minimums are currently $2,168 for actors and $3,062 for Stage Managers. But thats not the whole story. On Broadway a producer also pays $175 or $195 per week for health, 4% annuity, 14% in employer payroll taxes. That makes the SM approx $3,750 per week, the actor $2.750 a week. Plus the Burton Turkus Award gives AEA 2.88% of Gross box office for the pension fund. Even at $300,000 gross, that's another $8,600 a week. With cast and understudies and SMS running to about 24, that's about another $375 a week each. Lets called it $3,000 pw for each actor and $4,000 pw for the SM. The UK actors are considered self-employed and are responsible for their own national insurance payments etc. UK stagehands (with a few exceptions) do not have craft lines, and work a 40 hour week - not just show calls. For salaries once again no more than 50% of their US counterparts. In the US, THE INHERITANCE was a massively expensive enterprise - and the show had really know profile here. And reviews (of Part 2) and Word of Mouth were not strong. What could they have done differently? Perhaps taken account of teh different markets more carefully - or started this huge project in the US as it started in the UK - at the Public or MTC or the Roundabout or Lincoln Center - and see how it goes. Bottom line - people just didnt want to see it. |
