Belize is also very clear that he has an entire life outside of the white people at the center of the play, which helps to make him more than just a magical negro. There’s a lot of intelligent writing on many sides of this question, and Kushner wouldn’t write it the same way today, but I tend to agree that Belize is a complicated character with agency who is integral to the play. He’s also launched more careers than the other characters have, so the role is doing an economic service.
