| I very much agree with your well stated analysis, Delvino. I wasn't sure I wanted to commit to two performances totaling almost seven hours. I loved ANGELS (three different productions over the years). But when a friend encouraged me to see THE INHERITANCE, we got tickets to part one, and I was hooked. It's a very different work than ANGELS; but I found it riveting, funny, heartbreaking, intelligent, and very moving. It is hard not to be swept up in the stunning part one closing scene. Due to holidays and scheduling, I didn't get to see Part 2 until two months later, on January 2. I understand some of the criticism; yes, it can be melodramatic and borders on soap opera, but I found it all to be gripping, seductive, and emotionally overpowering - I was drained by the end of the night. There were numerous high points - Delvino mentions Henry's big scene; I also found Lois Smith's big monologue to be overwhelming and heart wrenching. And the themes of the play - love, loss, and hope, the universal need for community and connection, plus the passing of legacies from generation to generation, all resonate. Each of the characters is dealing with pain, hurt, but also healing, and the actors convey those feelings brilliantly. The three and a half hours blew by, and I could have sat for longer. It has been described as a similar experience to binging on a Netflix series, which is accurate, but INHERITANCE has a lot more substance. I had never read or seen "Howard's End" before seeing THE INHERITANCE. I watched the movie version the night after seeing part 2, and the ingenious way Lopez has based his play on the Forster story only added to my appreciation. I'm so glad I was convinced to see this production and urge those on the fence not to miss it. |
