| Wayman, this isn't meant as a criticism, I'm genuinely curious. If it were Sweeney Todd, you wouldn't refer to it as Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, right? We all know who wrote Porgy and Bess. So do you feel bound by the requirement that the title Porgy and Bess always be preceded by "Gershwin's" even in an informal chat? What is the actual nature of this requirement? In what contexts is it actually required, and what would happen to somebody who refused to submit to it and just said (or wrote) "Porgy and Bess"? |
