| It's NOT, in fairness or reality, "The Gershwin's Porgy and Bess" and should never be called that or credited that way as it erases and underplays the role of and the huge and fundamental contribution of and collaboration with the book writer. More than any composer on Broadway he has made sure to give credit to his book writers for the shows he is known for, and has insisted his show not be called "Sondheim's..." even though more and more that is how they are advertised especially in non-broadway productions. And I don't blame those producers/companies for that since for many people Sondheim is a house-hold name but many of his shows titles are not. And while I agree with him, it seems like a losing battle, including for Porgy & Bess. Even the MET was calling it that. They even had Audra call it that in the cinema broadcast. I found that especially crazy given her respect for Sondheim and the controversy with him and her revival which started this issue officially. But it is also about branding and keeping the name alive of great artists. Albee started insisting on it too, back in the 90s or 00s, and I get why. Which isn't the same as he wrote his plays alone, and the Gershwins didn't write P&G alone... but their work is also the primary (not only, but primary) reason P&G is so celebrated and remembered... even if it is deeply unfair to separate the writerly contributions like that, it is a musical/opera after all. |
