it's especially egregious that the show is titled as if the Gershwins came up with the idea/premise/story/characters, since they very clearly did not... and the book writer being pushed aside in the title credits is the same writer who wrote the source material the entire show is based on. He actually adapted his book into a play first, co-written by his wife, which the opera was actually adapted from. So he has written 3 versions in 3 different formats, and it's somehow now The Gershwins...

I do find it interested though that the opera is adapted from the play, but his wife was not included or at least credited in the libretto adaptation. According to wiki she was a playwright, and so in theory a lot of how his novel was made into a play was her work and influence, and the opera is surely taken more from the dramatic text she and he wrote from the novel than it is from the novel itself. Seems odd that she wasn't part of the opera, and if she was that she wasn't credited. It even says she convinced him that it would work as a play.

I wonder what the story is there.
