I’ve been lucky enough to see both the 1959 film version (screened at the Library of Congress) and a production of the play PORGY at the late, great American Century Theatre here in Virginia.

The film version had some fabulous performances, but was very static. It was as if it were a stage production and instead of the camera moving, our eyes had to move left and right across the 70mm Todd-AO screen. The music adaptation by Andre Previn was gorgeous. It was a very straightforward version of the opera, and I remain baffled why the powers that be refuse to let the public see it.

The straight play was very compelling, and I was surprised how much dialogue made it verbatim into the opera. There were times I was expecting the cast to burst into song.

I hope this new film is better than the Diane Paulus stage version.
