Why one succeed and the other doesn't is a question that could be asked of any number of actresses that are someone what similar. One soars, the other doesn't. I have to imagine some of it has to do with their management and the career goals they are looking to achieve.

Im a huge fan of both. It seems like Erivo was a bit for available (press etc) and contemporized her look, did the "Circuit" of talk shows etc. Also, the fact that Erivo got close to an EGOT (all for Color Purple) so fast got her extra attention. It also seems like Headley was more focused on her personal life.

I think the real truth will be told by longevity. Will Erivo be a skyrocket and burns out as quickly as she started or will she continue to climb to stardom. Headley is more of a steady state player.

If I recall correctly -- and others may remember this in more detail -- after Aida, Headley expressed little interest in Broadway, choosing instead to focus on a recording career.

Headley was pretty clear that she wanted to be a recording artist. She won the Tony for Aida in 2000 and did the Actors Fund Dreamgirls benefit in 2001. Her first album came out in 2002. Aside from appearing as a singer in a movie in 2004, I don't think she did any acting, whether on stage or in film, again until 2012 when she was in The Bodyguard in London.

She had some success as a recording artist, but never had that big hit. But she was nominated for the Grammy for Best New Artist and her first 2 albums went gold.

A few years ago, Headley did a one-night-only
show at American Songbook, which was absolutely
terrific!!! She talked a lot about being at home in Chicago.

Erivo did a Live From Lincoln Center show a year or two
ago, which was dull, dull, dull. Every song sounded the
same and she stood in one spot all evening.

I remember the Erivo concert. It was certainly not exciting. Some of the song choices were good. But, it did all sound the same.
