SIX Musical - last night
Posted by: vladimir 01:38 pm EST 02/14/20

It's .... a.......... concert. Full stop. With full-throated, VERY contemporary/Idol singers. Good news: it's 70 minutes, script/banter is humorous (70% of the time), light design is fairly remarkable. Bad news: fans are cuckoo bananas with adoration and screaming (headachy), there is zero plot, and songs are marginal (lyrics fare better). Cute to see all-female cast and band, all very game and all very talented. This will be your thing, or it won't. It's gonna have legs with teens, queens and middle-aged women.

And I'm thrilled by the idea of a musical that so excites teenage girls.

Excuse my ignorance but where are all these screaming fans coming from? The show just started previews. It sounds like something that would build up over time. Are there that many fans from previous productions coming to NY to see it again?

With Spotify being so popular, musicals can develop a cult following without people having seen them. Take "Be More Chill" as an example. My own teen daughter found "Six" online and is obsessed with it.

It has played a couple places already, but a studio recording has also been available since June.

I passed on this when it was in Chicago for all the reasons you detail. It's not interesting to me in the least, but very interesting to the audiences you mention.

I really loved this is London, but I paid 35 pounds for a great seat (less than $50). I'm not sure I'd see it again in NYC for more than double that price. Also, the Arts Theatre where is plays in the West End is TONY, making the mid sized Atkinson seem huge by comparison.

To that end, it's the only show coming up this spring that my non regular theatre going friends have asked me about. I do think this will be a hit. And I do think that no matter what I said above, I'll see it again!

I saw the tryout in Boston and paid $65 for my seat. Unfortunately I was tired when I watched it and did find it a bit hyper. It’s a lot of fun, the cast is delightful but I don’t think it’s worth paying a lot to see it. On the other hand, I don’t think you need to sit close to enjoy it.

Luckily the audience in Boston was enthusiastic but not too crazy.

I wonder if it will suffer the fate of Taboo...which was a nice fun novelty in a small club in London but a wretched mess in nyc

We saw it in London in December and loved it. My husband thought it was one of the best things he had seen in some time. (We visit NY at least annually and see a lot in SF). We have tix for it in NY in May (the London trip was last minute after already buying NY).

At the Friday performance we saw in London, the crowd was certainly spirited and appreciative, but I really didn't hear any screaming except in the final "Megamix" which sort of encourages it. The show is more than the sum of its parts. When I heard the recording after buying NY tickets, I thought "eeew this is Spice Girls do Henry VIII!" but by the second listen, all the hooks hooked me. And the lyrics are delightfully clever. Yeah, the near rhymes might irritate some to distraction, and the concert/reality competition sounds like a lame conceit - BUT the thing is, it works!

I have a little interest in seeing this show, but the idea of being in the midst of a ton of screaming audience members sounds like the Ninth Circle of Hell.

I saw it at a basement tiny theater in London. In that venue it was 70 minutes of rousing fun. Not sure that it belongs on Broadway, but would be huge in Las Vegas....

I hate going to a show where everyone is screaming (and I felt really old since I didn't know what they were screaming about!). I thought I was missing something!

I saw it at ART and loved it. It was a matinee, so maybe there wasn't as much screaming lol - though I do remember some.

Yes, there's little to no plot, and the "resolution" of said minimal plot is rather iffy. I love the score (and the lyrics especially), I'm ok with the jokey nature of the script. I enjoyed the cast, and the onstage band and the guitar/bass players rocking out (the bass player for the ART run is a friend/colleague, so very fun to see her up there). I would agree with the others that are saying this has more of an off-Broadway feel. The show clearly has a lot of hype, so I assume that will sustain the NYC run for a while. Maybe it's not for everyone, but I'll admit to being a fan. (I won't scream, though.)

I also saw it at ART and loved it. Witty, upbeat. A little heavy on the wink/wink aspect, but forgivable, since overall it was a satisfying theater outing.
My husband and I (both 70+ in years) were delighted that there was no screaming/screeching as we had endured at a matinee of Jagged Little Pill at ART.
Ditto the comments re SIX having an off-Broadway feel.
Very happy I saw it where I did.

There are 9 on Amazon. Are there more on stage? I checked Ibdb and it lists 9 also.

Would side wall seats be an issue. I see some at $109. I assume most action is center front stage.

Listening to the sample on amazon, I’m almost inclined to skip the show completely. I’m sure it will be done regionally in a year or two.

Saw the show in London in June, my program lists 10 songs including a Mega-mix. I paid 40 pounds for the ticket, about $52. Loved the show, the women were fantastic, very high energy. Not sure I want to see it here at Broadway prices, I really think this show should be off-Broadway. I guess time will tell.

I haven't seen SIX yet, but ALTAR BOYZ had quite a lot of dialogue in it, and also a sort of a "plot," if not a very strong one. So I'm not sure I see the similarity.

Yes, very much so. The theatre I saw it in reminded me of one of the larger New World Theatre stages.

9 Sounds right. Each queen has a solo, plus the opening/closing numbers and "House of Holbein" - that makes 9. There's also a megamix included in the 70 minute run time - so you're actually getting about 65 minutes of new material.

The show is a fun, high energy concert dependent wholly on the vocal gymnastics of the cast. The book is, in some places, cringeworthingly bad. A series of "jokes" centered around the one or two character traits we learn about each woman - so prepare for a lot of "I DIED IN CHILDBIRTH" or "I LOST ME HEAD MATE!" jokes.

That all being said... I've seen it twice.

for god's sake don't pay any more than 100 bucks. You can sit anywhere. Theatre is small/medium. Set doesn't change.

On the "other board", it's unanimous raves. I'm really looking forward to seeing it in a couple of months. I'm seeing it the same day as COMPANY, so I figure I'll get my variety in.
