| I loved Erivo in Color Purple, as everyone did. But I can't even say she was as great in it as Fantasia in the original version, which was an inferior production. But I'm glad you were so thrilled by Aida. Toni's performance in Wild Party is one of the best and favorite performances I've ver seen in a Broadway musical. Sadly Erivo doesn't even make the top 5, despite how amazing she was. Heather's performance was also extraordinary, but honestly I don't remember nearly as well or as fondly because I didn't love the show like I did Wild Party. |

| CONTACT was a wonderful show. One of the best I've ever seen and thoroughly original and inventive. | |

| I was glad it won. It deserved Brantley's rave. Maybe it should've been nominated fo rBest Play but regardless, it was fantastic. | |

| I enjoyed the dance/movement work a lot, but for me, only the dance club scene worked on a truly theatrical level. The first section, beautiful as it was, became too much about "how not to get hit when there's a swing coming at you" and the restaurant scene, though I got what it was aiming for, suffered from too much of the "I told you not to fucking move" stuff (i.e. it felt way too one-dimensional theatrically to me). And the prerecorded score...I know, I know...but as a musician, that hits me in a way it might not bother others. Especially when vocals were involved as well - so that the songs became background (like a film score) instead of an integral theatrical part of the moment. Not as satisfying to me. |

| Ironically Contact was that rare Broadway musical that really did have a soundtrack recording instead of a cast album. | |

| Interesting that not too many people bring up La Chanze's performance, which won a Tony for the original "Color Purple". | |

| It is interesting. lol. Can't explain it. But good as she is, I think Fantasia blew her away as her replacement, and Erivo's performance in the revival got a lot more buzz because she seemed fresher and more surprising in the role, and she was a new person to Broadway audiences. I don't think it helped La Chanze that people viewed the show less favorably in that production, but Erivo starred in one that made people reconsider it and love it unexpectedly. But she has some stiff competition in 2006, and I'm honestly almost surprised she beat Patti in Sweeney AND Kelli in Pajama Game, both pretty thoroughly raved about performances in raved about popular productions, and then there was also Sutton in Drowsy and Chita in A Dancer's Life, but I don't think either had a chance to beat La Chanze or Patti or Kelli. |
